Adaptive Division – Rules & Guidelines (Push–Pull Event)

At Xpand Your Limits, we believe strength has no limits. Our Adaptive Division is designed to create a safe, fair, and empowering competition for athletes of all abilities. We are in partnership with The Resilience Movement Fitness and Adaptive Training to ensure athlete safety and success for this division.

1. Divisions

Hearing Impaired – Athletes with significant hearing loss.

Vision Impaired – Athletes with partial or full loss of vision.

Lower Body Impairment – Athletes with mobility impairments affecting legs/hips (e.g., wheelchair users, limb difference, paralysis).

Note: Athletes should self-select the category that best represents their abilities. If unsure, please contact meet staff prior to competition.

2. Athlete Safety & Check-In

Division Cap: The Adaptive Division will be limited to 10 athlete spots for this event.

Individual Athlete Calls: Each adaptive lifter will schedule a call with Cassidy Tennille from The Resilience Movement Fitness and Adaptive Training prior to competition. Cassidy will review your needs, answer questions, and ensure the safest and most successful lifting experience possible.

3. Competition Lifts

Bench Press and Deadlift remain the official lifts.

Equipment modifications (straps, blocks, bench straps) may be permitted if declared at check-in.

Each lift follows standard commands, with adaptive communication as outlined below.

4. Commands & Communication

Hearing Impaired: Judges will give hand signals + verbal commands.

Vision Impaired: Judges will give clear verbal cues (“Start,” “Press,” “Rack,” etc.) and spotters will provide consistent hand-offs.

Lower Body Impairment: Spotters may assist with bar set-up as needed. Hand-off assistance is permitted if requested.

5. Spotting & Safety

Extra spotters may be assigned for adaptive lifters.

Spotters and loaders will be briefed on athlete-specific needs before each attempt.

Athletes are encouraged to communicate preferences during warm-up and at weigh-in (e.g., tactile cue vs. verbal).

6. Venue Accessibility

Warm-up area, platform, bathrooms, and athlete check-in are wheelchair accessible.

Volunteers will be available for assistance with navigation and equipment.

7. Scoring & Awards

Adaptive athletes compete within their respective division.

Awards will be presented separately for Adaptive categories to celebrate performance and participation.

All athletes will be recognized with the same level of respect and visibility as other divisions.

8. Athlete Orientation

A brief adaptive athlete/volunteer meeting will be held before lifting begins to review commands, hand-offs, and safety.

Athletes should bring up any specific accommodations needed at this time.

Our Commitment

This is our first year expanding to Adaptive Divisions, and we are committed to learning and improving. We welcome athlete feedback to help us grow.
