The Trip I Almost Didn’t Take

This past weekend, I went to visit a high school friend in Houston, Texas — home of the world’s largest rodeo (check out the picture below).

If I’m honest, before I left, I was in a week where I had a lot to get done and wasn’t all that excited to go. It felt more like a hassle than something I was looking forward to.

I had seen on the news that airports were chaotic, so I prayed, “God, if You want me to go, make my travel easy and let everything go smoothly. If not, make it troublesome or close the door.”

Well, I showed up on Thursday, and everything went incredibly smoothly. So I thought, “Alright, Texas here I come!”

What I didn’t realize was that this small weekend getaway — a new environment, new people, and fresh experiences — was exactly what I needed.

What I first viewed as more of a hassle than a help ended up being a reminder of how important it is to step away from our everyday routines sometimes. To breathe. To reset. To simply be.

Sometimes the thing we resist most is the very thing our mind, body, and spirit need.

What I think

As someone who is very driven and loves checking things off her to-do list, it’s easy for me to get lost in the next thing that needs to be done.

There’s always another task.
Another project.
Another goal to accomplish.

And the truth is… there always will be.

For go-getters and high performers, taking time off can actually feelunproductive. Our brain starts creating stories that we’ll fall behind if we step away for a few days.

And if you’re an entrepreneur — where your livelihood is directly tied to your work — that feeling gets amplified tenfold.

But here’s the thing:

God didn’t create us to be human doers.
He created us to be human beings.

So go… be.

Take the trip.
Book the cabin.
Go have a fun night off.

Why?

Because you freaking can.

And sometimes the reset you’re resisting is exactly what will help you come back sharper, clearer, and more aligned with what actually matters.

The one degree shift

Put something on your calendar this week or weekend that is just fun.

It's not to accomplish anything.
It's not to progress you toward a goal.

It's just for fun.

Last year, I released our most-viewed episode yet with Brittany McCurdy:“More Than the Goal.”

In this conversation, Brittany opens up about what it means to hold the identity of an athlete—and how stepping into motherhood has challenged and reshaped that identity in a whole new way.
